When the pandemic began in March 2020 Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg was worth $54.7 billion and today his current net worth is $111 billion. That's more than double. I realized that these days I am spending a lot of time on Instagram. This made me think about how these social media apps have boomed during the pandemic.

For the sake of convenience, let's divide apps into two categories, Useful and Useless.

Useful apps solve real-world problems and provide value to user. This is the flow of a useful app:

User with problem -> app -> real world solution -> user satisfied -> app gets more attention

Eg. Uber, Make My Trip etc

Useless apps are time wasters, do not solve a problem, no direct real-world change, get the user hooked and addicted. This is the flow of a useless app:

User with free time -> app -> other users with free time -> time waste together -> Addicted

Eg. Instagram, Facebook, online games etc

Useful apps suffered in the pandemic as no one could go outside to enjoy or be productive. Useless apps boomed as people had more time to kill.
